Some Things I Won’t Miss About LA

April 7, 2008

  • Women wearing belts that don’t hold anything up

  • Hookers of questionable gender standing on the corner a block and a half away from my place on either side
  • Potholes
  • Cost of living
  • Goons and tourists on Hollywood Blvd

  • Not having an oven/stove/dishwasher
  • Traffic light cameras
  • No parking whatsoever

A million other things. But this is #1. People who parallel park in front of my (private) driveway or just plain park behind me and cause me to be late for work, etc. Here are some examples of one particular day where I missed a tennis match do to a mystery car blocking my driveway.

Rest In Peace: Keoni Lucas

April 6, 2008

Last week I was informed of the death of a friend and colleague, Keoni Lucas. I refrained from posting anything for a while in hopes that an April Fool’s day prank was involved. That was not the case. He passed away as a result of a car accident.

From Surfline:

One of Kauai’s North Shore’s favorite sons passed away tragically late at night on Saturday, March 29th. Son of famed Kauai gentleman surfer Jimmy Lucas, Keoni was driving home late after work towards his Santa Monica, California home and fell asleep at the steering wheel. A memorial will be held Sunday morning at 11am at Point Dume State Beach, Westward Beach Road, Malibu, CA, Lifeguard Tower 1. His funeral will be held in Hawaii at a time still to be determined.

Lucas, a longtime surfer and sailboarder, was often pegged as a friendly, outgoing guy who was well respected throughout the Hawaiian surf community. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry and was known to be a hard worker who always had a smile on his face and lived life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed.

Read a report from The Kauai Garden Island News

Keoni was a skilled camera operator and an all around good guy. We worked very closely together for the better part of the year in 2005 for a show on the Style Network.

The last time I saw him was in 2007, he was in my neighborhood documenting the hell that is the 101 Freeway from atop the Sunset overpass. I happened to drive by and honked. We spoke for maybe 30 seconds, then I moved on to finish whatever it was that I had planned, and he went about his work.

You never know when you might have seen someone for the last time.
